We wine nerds have been hearing about Patagonian Pinot Noir for a few years now, and yet they are still quite rare on American shelves, and tend to be expensive. With this wine we have solved both problems. Patagonia is an area around twice the size of California that straddles both Chile and Argentina, so naturally there are sub-regions. In 1999 the Viola family were the first to plant a vineyard in the Neuquena region that lies directly to the South of Mendoza, where the elevation and rainfall lowers dramatically. Comahue means “defiance of logic” in the indigenous language, and Patagonia being a desert, this is an acknowledgement of the remarkable health that the vines enjoy when given a little water from the Neuquena river. The vineyards have always been farmed sustainably and organically, with use of beneficial insects, hay mulching for weed control and on site composting, the grapes are hand picked and the wine is fermented in oak casks before aging in 40% new French oak barrels.
